  • Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs)
  • Aromatase Inhibitor Therapy
  • Androgen Deprivation Therapy
  • Ovarian & Testicular Suppression

Overview

Slowing cancer by targeting the hormones that fuel it

Certain cancers, most commonly breast and prostate cancer, rely on hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone to grow. Hormonal therapy works by blocking these hormones from reaching cancer cells, or by lowering hormone levels in the body altogether — slowing tumour growth, reducing recurrence risk, and in many cases offering years of effective, well-tolerated disease control.

Treatment begins with hormone receptor testing of the tumour to confirm it is hormone-sensitive and likely to respond. Based on the results, an appropriate approach is selected — this may include medications that block hormone receptors directly, drugs that lower hormone production in the body, or, in select cases, surgical or medical suppression of the ovaries or testicles. Treatment duration is often longer than chemotherapy, commonly continuing for several years, with regular monitoring to track effectiveness and manage any side effects such as bone density changes or menopausal symptoms.

Because hormonal therapy is often one part of a larger treatment plan, every case is discussed within a multidisciplinary tumour board — medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology working together to sequence treatments for the best possible outcome.

What We Offer

Hormonal Therapy Services

Precision treatments that target the hormones driving your cancer’s growth.

Hormone Receptor Testing

Testing of the tumour for estrogen, progesterone, or androgen receptors to confirm hormone sensitivity and guide treatment selection.

Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs)

Medications such as tamoxifen that block estrogen from binding to receptors on breast cancer cells, slowing or stopping their growth.

Aromatase Inhibitor Therapy

Drugs that lower estrogen production in the body, used primarily in post-menopausal women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Treatment that lowers testosterone levels or blocks its effects, used to slow the growth of hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.

Ovarian Suppression

Medical or surgical suppression of ovarian hormone production, used alongside other hormonal therapies in select breast cancer cases.

Combination Hormonal Regimens

Carefully sequenced combinations of hormonal agents, or hormonal therapy alongside targeted therapy, to maximise effectiveness.

Bone Health & Side-Effect Monitoring

Regular monitoring of bone density and management of menopausal or hormone-related side effects throughout extended treatment.

Hormonal Therapy Education & Counselling

One-on-one sessions before starting treatment to explain the specific regimen, expected effects, and long-term monitoring — helping patients feel prepared and informed.

Immunotherapy Education & Counselling

One-on-one sessions before starting treatment to explain how immunotherapy works, what to expect, and which symptoms to report promptly — helping patients and families feel prepared and confident throughout care.

Our Approach

The Hormonal Therapy Advantage

Long-term disease control, guided by your tumour’s hormone profile.

A clear, supported path from first consultation through to long‑term follow‑up.

Treatment Guided by Receptor Status

Drug selection is based on confirmed hormone receptor testing — ensuring therapy is only used where it's likely to be effective.

Sustained, Long-Term Disease Control

Hormonal therapy is often continued for several years, offering durable protection against recurrence for hormone-sensitive cancers.

Proactive Monitoring & Side-Effect Care

Regular bone density checks and symptom management help patients stay comfortable throughout extended treatment.

Multidisciplinary, Whole-Person Care

Medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology coordinate to sequence hormonal therapy within your complete treatment plan.

Hormone receptor testing of the tumour tissue confirms whether it is hormone-sensitive. Only cancers testing positive for these receptors are likely to respond to hormonal therapy.

Duration varies by cancer type, but treatment commonly continues for five years or longer, particularly for hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

Effects vary by treatment type and may include menopausal-type symptoms, bone density changes, or hot flashes. These are monitored and managed throughout treatment.

Both are used, depending on the specific treatment. Some options are oral tablets taken at home, while others, such as ovarian suppression, are given by injection.

Yes, hormonal therapy is often combined with targeted therapy or given after chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation, depending on your specific cancer and stage.
