Sarcomas are rare and biologically diverse cancers that can arise in bone, muscle, fat, nerve, or connective tissue almost anywhere in the body. Because they often sit close to major nerves, blood vessels, and joints, successful treatment depends on wide, planned surgical clearance combined with careful reconstruction to preserve as much function as possible — most often avoiding amputation through limb-sparing techniques.

Treatment begins with detailed imaging — MRI, CT, and PET — alongside image-guided biopsy to confirm tumour type and grade before any surgical plan is made. Surgical resection is planned around a wide margin of healthy tissue surrounding the tumour, with reconstruction using endoprosthetic implants, bone grafts, or soft tissue flaps performed to restore stability and movement. For sarcomas in the abdomen or retroperitoneum, resection is planned around surrounding organs and major vessels with equal precision.

Because sarcoma treatment often involves chemotherapy or radiation before or after surgery, every case is reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumour board — orthopaedic oncology, surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and rehabilitation specialists working together to shape a plan that treats the cancer while protecting mobility and independence.
